What is confidence & what does it mean to you?

Knowing you’re able to do something, believing in yourself, feeling like others believe in you.

Sometimes it has nothing to do with your abilities, but how you feel others are perceiving you. Confidence is a personal experience, so connect to what feeling confident means to you. For some people, feeling confident is actually not caring what outside forces may say or think. For others, it’s caring but doing whatever they want anyway.

We all deserve to feel great in our bodies. Finding items that work for you & make you feel 100% can help you step into the room with confidence in yourself. We’ve spoken about this in a few blog posts, like our Bad Girl Wardrobe Staples & How to Dress Rockabilly blogs. Clothing should be about play, having fun with how you look, how you feel others see you & allowing yourself to step forward in the strongest way you can.

So, grab yourself a nice cuppa, and let’s get right into our top tips on feeling more confident.

Confidence Tip #1: Find shapes that work for you

There are guides around styles that work best for various body shapes. Remember these are just guides! If you’re completely lost then they’re a great place to start, but that doesn’t mean you need to follow them to the letter. These guides are usually based on body shape, and how to dress to best flatter it. While these are great guides to get an idea of what cuts and shapes work will be most flattering for you, remember… there really aren’t any rules. Other than wear what makes you feel good!

So, if the shape which makes you feel great is a sleek Cat Woman style bodysuit or clothing that creates this image… or, you’re more of a classic hourglass lover, pick clothing that gives you the shape you want to see.

Confidence Tip #2: Spark JOY!

Does it bring you joy when you pick up the item, catch sight of yourself in the mirror, or look down? I find that when I catch a glimpse of myself as I walk by a shop & see something I love (tasselled leather jacket, oh heck yes!) then it makes me feel good. And feeling good makes me feel confident.

It’s a delightfully simple concept, wear clothing which makes you feel happy. When you feel happy you step forward with energy which is contagious. People sense how you feel, connect with it, and remember you as that amazing woman who spent the whole time with a smile on her face.

My favourite tricks here are tassels, sparkles, beads, fun or novelty prints. Other times I really get a kick out of feeling like I’m dressed like a picture or character I love. So if I’m wearing something I feel like Ann Margret would wear in Viva Las Vegas, that’s a goal. Or, if my outfit has an air of early Debbie Harry or a classic Gwen Stefani look, I feel great. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness. Give it a try!

Confidence Tip #3: Bring out your best

alberto vargas | Dressing for Confidence

This one can feel incredibly tough, but here is a challenge (lovingly thrown down for you…) go take a look in a full-length mirror & find 3 things you love about yourself. Be it that you have a beautiful smile, elegant wrists, pretty feet (as someone with UGLY feet, I’m forever jealous of you).

Now, I ask you to do this every day… for a month ideally, finding new things each day (no repeats! I know, I’m tough). Take it one day at a time & see where you get to. Now, the next time you try on an outfit, does it highlight one of the bits of you, you love?

The trick here is to open up your wardrobe & style to support the parts of you that you love, rather than hide them. So if you have a great decolletage, go for that super-low draped neckline. Have great legs? Crack those babies out! There are no rules & even if you are after an authentic vintage style, there are hemlines for every era, you don’t have to stick to below the knee to be ‘truly 50s’, you can go for the Vargas pin-up look (pictured.)

Aim to get one of the features you love about yourself to be the highlight or point of each outfit you wear, & you’ll start to feel like the goddess you are.

Confidence Tip #4: Pick your colour

Similarly to the guides around certain cuts for particular body shapes, finding the colours which work for you doesn’t necessarily mean following the rules.

There are certain colours that I feel bring out the colour of my eyes, and bring warmth to my skin tone. Thankfully these are also the colours that my ‘traditional approach’ colour chart (warm spring, darling) would have me wearing. But if you love a warm spring but some colour charts say it’s not the one for youfudge that colour chart! What we’re looking for here are the colours that bring you confidence. For some, it might be bright red, with a traditional power dressing approach. For others, it may be colours based on natural tones which support you feeling grounded. Or maybe blues & greens remind you of being in the sea or near the ocean and so they empower you.

It’s about what serves you, remember!

Confidence Tip #5: Dress as your own superhero

This is similar to dressing as one of your idols or style icons. But let’s take it a little further…

Say you’re off to the gym, have never been before & feel a little nervous about walking into a gym. Or being seen running down the road, in that zoom dance class… think to yourself, what would your superhero do? Your superhero might be your mum, aunt, best friend, film star past or present, musician. If you love Katy Perry & emulating her style, go check her out on Instagram and see, what does Katy Perry wear to work out? Can you find out what Eartha Kitt, Marylin Monroe or Audrey Hepburn or Betty Page wore to workout? (We have a shortcut for you here! Check out this blog post), pull their style into yours and, with it, their confidence.

So this concludes our top 5 tips to dress for a more confident you. To start with, the confidence might not feel so real. But do practise the self-love task above and try adding one of these points into your dressing approach each day. And then let us know how you get on! And keep in mind the age-old saying of “fake it til you make it”. You’ve got this!
