How to dress like a badass
Channeling your inner badass is easy when you have a select few wardrobe staples. Whether you’re trying to put together your own capsule wardrobe or bring in a hint of something new & branch out into a slightly different aesthetic, we’re here to help make it easier for you by taking out the hard work.
We’ve compiled a list of staple badass clothing items that will have you well on your way to dressing like the badass you are. Whether you’re more of a 50s rockabilly type of gal or a more modern 00’s Kate Moss, or just somewhere in the middle, there’s going to be something for you in this blog post.
Where to get started
We believe that the foundation of being a bad girl starts within. Confidence is one of the key factors in being a bad girl. So naturally, we have to ask, what does being a badass mean to you? What are the steps you can take to step into that role and be more confident in yourself?
I don’t know about you, but I stand by the notion that once you step into your authentic self, everything else follows.
To me, being a badass isn’t all about how you present yourself aesthetically (though of course, it does go hand in hand) and there are really no rules to it. It’s all about who you are, and being authentic to yourself at all times is the most badass thing you can do! This is a topic for another blog post though.
For now, let’s talk clothes… It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes an outfit truly look badass, however, I don’t know about you… but when I think of a badass outfit in my head, there tend to be those few key items that are just repeating staples. So I thought, why not compile a list of them for you!
90’s & 00’s inspiration
Alexa Chung & Kate Moss are both icons in the fashion world. They are the epitome of badass women in this day & age, and rightfully so. We see them both oftentimes sporting a few key basics, in order to create an outfit that has a bad girl feel to it. But as I mentioned earlier, we see some similarities in all of the outfits.
If a more rock’n’roll badass style is more your thing…
Let’s look towards (in order) Juliette Lewis, Karen O & PJ Harvey. 3 iconic badass ladies, in our book. We’re loving PJ’s wide-leg jeans here. Do you prefer wide-leg jeans or are you more of a skinny jeans person?
Badass outfit staple #1: A good pair of Jeans
We really believe that when you’re comfortable, you feel good. I’m sure we can all agree that there’s nothing worse than wearing an outfit that may look good but feels awfully uncomfortable on. Having to constantly rearrange/fiddle with/fix it is not the one, I must say.
And this reflects in your body language 9 times out of 10.
Our jeans are made from stretch denim and are designed using your measurements.
Meaning, gone are the days of your jeans fitting great on the legs & hips but gaping at the waist! Yep, even if you’re blessed with super curves or a petite babe. We’ve got a pair of jeans to suit everyone, whether you’re looking for rockabilly jeans or a more biker chick/rock and roll look.
The best part? Our jeans are made with the environment in mind. Sustainable, ethical, and fair trade. Transparency on this is so important to us. So you can read about that more here: Our sustainable denim story
Badass outfit staple #2: Leather / Moto Jacket
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I feel like it’s a universal thing to picture a good leather jacket when thinking of a badass...
These jackets are so versatile and go with so many different outfits. They really are one of the most timeless clothing items out there, & are the best way to add a hint of edge to any outfit.
It can be difficult to shop for leather/moto jackets sustainably and ethically, though.
You can either opt for a brand that specializes in vegan leather jackets (while being mindful of the materials they use, plastics, & waste) or, you can shop second-hand/vintage. Charity & vintage shops are your best friend here! This just comes down to personal ethics, and what you feel comfortable with. You do you!
Badass outfit staple #3: 50s Pencil Skirts
We have a blog all about pencil skirts and how to style them... So yeah, I guess you could say we are a fan of the classic pencil skirt.
Think Rizzo from Grease, an iconic badass babe. When I think of her outfits, I think of the all-black one that features that gorgeous pencil skirt… Heart eyes!
Our V2 pencil skirt is inspired and designed using the classic authentic 50s pencil skirt silhouette. Limited edition AND they’re currently on sale! What more could you want?
A great base item for any outfit, and you can dress pencil skirts up or down & for night or day. And you all know how much we love versatile pieces.
Badass outfit staple #4: a good, structured Blouse
The last staple item in any bad girl wardrobe… A well-structured blouse is a great one because of how versatile it is day to day, and how you can style it based on your mood.
Dressed up with a pencil skirt, or dressed down for a more androgynous or masculine look with some jeans.
Take our Jill top, for example. Based on an authentic 40’s pattern (and named after Farrah Fawcett’s character in Charlies Angels.. the more you know!) you can button it all the way up for more formal attire, or undo a couple of buttons for that rebel-type look.
Also good to note, our Jill blouse has coconut buttons, meaning they’re eco-friendly AND biodegradable, with a gathered waistband which nips you in & creates an hourglass figure.
